Beowolf, Book Vs. Movie Comparison Recently, I both watched and read the story “Beowolf.” There were major differences between the two. In the first scene, for instance the Geats are faced with a curse in the form of a man-eating monster called Grendel. In order to not only help the Geats but also to further his ego, the Dane hero Beowolf offers to kill Grendel. In the book Grendel eats the Geats while they sleep and it is dark in the hall. In the movie however the lights were still on and the Geats were lively and partying. Grendel blew out the candles with one huge blow upon his arrival at the hall. In the book Grendel blew the door off the hinges and this proved to remain the same during the movie. Another difference is that when Beowolf rose to battle Grendel in the book he fought alone and his men hid. During the fight scene in the movie the first people to attack Grendel were the soldiers that Beowolf brought with him. Beowolf did not attack until a few minutes after the fight began. This is a huge difference because Beowolf lost many men in the movie and in the book he only lost one, whom Grendel killed as soon as he entered the hall. Despite this huge difference Beowolf did fight naked in order to show that he did not need any armor and to make the fight fair. This is significant because he met Grendel in the same state that Grendel was in. It was a fair fight. The final major difference in the first scene is that in the book, Beowolf had ripped Grendel’s arm off with his bare hands and the Geats used the arm as a trophy. The use of Grendels arm as a trophy remained the same in both the book and the movie. However in the movie, Beowolf chops Grendel’s arm off by repeatedly smashing the door against it. The similarities and differences in the first scene are only the first of many. After Beowolf defeats Grendel everything is happy
