Benefits of a Grass Fed Animal Vincent R. Bond DeVry University English 135 January 21, 2013 The second section of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan, is well-written and thought provoking in that it reminds the reader an animal really is what they eat. This section deals with grass as a feed for animals and how they are handle before they are bought to market. I will be dealing with the 12th, 13th, and 14th chapters, which goes over the process of how an animal is prepared before it makes to your table. Chapters 12, 13, and 14 are a great finish to the second section of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, in that it tells you how an animal is killed, how it is marketed, and how it taste when eaten. The section I am reviewing does a great job of telling how a local farmer kills his chickens and the pressure he gets from the federal government on how he is not really following their guidelines. It lets you know that animals are still slaughtered, but it also tells you that they are well fed and allowed to grow naturally before they met their end. With all of this in mind the whole process is seem to be more of the practice of old when we all bought our meat from a local farmer and it was done with someone you knew and trusted. It reminds you that the majority of our food is big business and they are creating animals instead of growing animals for our consumption. The most important part to me is that you are eating a more healthy chicken or animal since it was grass fed and allow to grow in its’ season and not before its’ time. This section is strong because it provides vivid descriptions and he also makes a point of introducing his reader to concepts by describing his own observations and findings. I found Pollan credible because of the time he spent researching and participating in all aspects of food production, including the processes revolving
