Darien Sorensen Professor Potratz English 100 9 October 2009 Rhetorical Analysis on “Better Energy” Gwyneth Cravens addresses the issue of the use of nuclear energy in her article “Better Energy”. She starts off by introducing James Lovelock, who is a prominent figure in the green movement, but four years before she wrote her article, he upset his fans by endorsing the use of nuclear energy. She goes on to explain how the use of nuclear energy will be able to decrease the threat of global warming. She claims that nuclear energy is the only way to get the amount of energy that is needed, without critically hurting the environment. Through out her article Cravens highlights the environmental benefits of nuclear energy.
Based on the book when there are competitive markets such as airlines, a company certainly needs to look at costs and revenue very closely. (Brickley, Smith, & Zimmerman, 2009, p. 180) In this case I believe that the flights from San Francisco t Washington DC should be discontinued. Even though United Airlines is a large company and profitable if they continue these flights in the long run they will lose money. The other option that they would have would be to increase the fares to cover those costs, but since the airline industry is a competitive market people are more likely to go with a lower cost airline. The first thing the airline must do is look at the firm supply.
Since the industrial revolution the levels of atmospheric CO₂ have increased from 280 parts per million to 380ppm for the past 10,000. Globalisation has also had an effect to some degree on the climate, as third world countries have been able to develop due to the cheap and easy access to fossil fuels, they now have the technologies to
Modernity may cease with global warming as half the biggest companies are oil companies, and oil is the essence of life. Deforestation and the effects of global warming on our forests and trees are far-reaching and quite evident. All our planets physical features are changing rapidly. And McKibben repeats himself on purpose to get his point across: the planet we knew is no more, we live on a new, more complex and harsher
Another destruction that he talks about is the global warming. Researchers are trying to find expensive ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide as it pours from power plant smokestacks and finally won’t enter the atmosphere. But Mckibben claims that the cars and factories and furnaces will keep belching carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as long as we burn fossil fuels. He also cited what Yale economist William Nordhaus says, “the damage from global warming will be confined to farming and forestry, which represent only 3 percent of the
The people who are in favor of continuing the Mars exploration program are quick to point out that if every cent of the money allocated to their program were to be applied to the federal deficit, it would not even make a dent. Also, if the money was to be divided evenly among all of the poor in the country; there would not be enough to make any significant difference in their standard of living. It remains to be seen if all the money invested in exploring Mars will actually have any long term benefits for
Rationale/Purpose Up to this point in my life, I never considered how much I was personally responsible for impacting the environment. I now see the need to become more involved in making a difference in the world around me. The purpose of my environmental action plan is to implement what I have learned about my own carbon footprint in making necessary changes to my personal behavior toward the environment. List of Three Goals The goals that I have chosen to assist me with doing my part in changing the world in which we live are as follows: (1) Reduce the amount of miles that my husband and I drive by fifteen miles per week. (2) Reduce the amount of our electric and gas bill by 7% within the next year.
Government, as one of the most powerful administrations in the world, does have a significant amount of power that could be utilized in order to conserve these resources and benefit the economy, the country, and to an extent- the world. Robert Samuelson writes simply that if the government introduced anti-global warming laws, “fossil fuel prices [would] rise” and “consumers [would] quickly use less, and new supplies of ‘clean energy’ [would] magically materialize” (Source D). The amount of money it would take to “solve climate change, invest in a clean future, and save billions in imported oil”, would end up being around a dime per capita, per day. This low cost should be extremely appealing to the government, for “few things are more appealing in politics than something for nothing” (Source D). The government has already done a good job encouraging people to be more “green”, but the power they possess could improve the situation exponentially.
Speech We categorically believe that fracking is not the answer to the UK’s energy needs. I will be discussing health and environmental issues and my partner will be talking about the economic disaster it would undoubtable be. My argument will use the US as a case study for what could hypothetically become in the UK if fracking does in fact take off. Just a few years ago, fracking was sold to us as the ideal pathway to utilising our vast reserves of natural gas, a “perfect bridge fuel.†Gas executives promised that fracking would help rural communities, create jobs, cut carbon pollution and pose no threat to air and water quality, it sounded almost too good to be true, and it was. Now, several years after the start of America’s fracking
If you meet a woman start talking about global warming, it’s a real ice breaker! Climate Change by Itamar Livne Climate change refers to any distinct change in measures of climate lasting for a long period of time. Over the last twenty years, human induced climate change and global warming have become areas of growing concern for scientists, environmentalists, and public policy makers. While research into the causes and impact of climate change continues, it is becoming increasingly clear that coral reefs are among those environments most threatened by this phenomenon. Even Australia’s own Great Barrier Reef has been taken under the impact of climate change and even got declared as the most damaged coral reef in the world.
