Being Amish in a modern world! Who are we to say that a person way of living is right or wrong? Especially if it is working for them! People tend to have many different views and opinions on the Amish’s way of living. In all actuality they are living in accordance with their religious beliefs and teachings. In contrary, the Amish would have a fairly rough transition adjusting to modern society’s way of living especially due to the fact the amount of technology, and the limitation of advanced literacy skills. Understanding the Amish and their view on literacy, they generally go to school up until the eighth grade and are taught in one room class. This class room is located within the community and accommodates grades from first thru eighth. Typically, the teacher is a female from the community chosen by the leaders and has eighth a grade education as well. Some of us in the modern world that are illiterate to the Amish way of living may question “Why is this so?” or”Who would deny their children a formal education?” They believe that basic reading, writing, and math are sufficient and a higher education is not necessary because they are hands on people. The Amish view education differently from our modern way of life when it comes to education. Mainly due to practicality the Amish society dwell on agriculture, craftsmanship, and trade as a means of survival, so anything other than a basic education would be of limited value. Lastly, they may feel if their children are provided with a higher education they may become curious of the modern way of living, causing them to question their Christian values and potentially lead them to leave the community. The mission of Amish education is to prepare their children to remain Amish. Contrary to the Amish, most of us in today’s society look at literacy as means to keep a grasp on the ever changing world around us;
