The vision of what an English language teacher has changed over time; what was requested from the English language teacher has suffered some important changes. Long time ago, in order to find a job as an English teacher, knowledge of the language was a big advantage; and the probabilities increased if the person was a native speaker. That means that the past conception of what a good ESL teacher was that: if you knew the language, you were able to teach the language effectively. That perspective is not in vogue anymore. The arrival of a new century, and its new demands has required other criteria when selecting an English teacher. Institutions are requesting not only teachers who have proficiency in the language, but teachers who know how to teach the language, and act accordingly. There is no point of return about it. Educational institutions are demanding teaching professionals with the appropriate characteristics to help their students to succeed in mastering a second/foreign language. Due to this relevant change in English teaching, there is an urgent need for better English teachers. Teachers with a commitment with excellence. Teachers who must realize that being a teacher is becoming a life-long learner. Teacher development is about all that, trying to develop the three main aspects of a good English teaching practice: becoming a better English speaker, a better person, and of course a better teacher. Teacher Development. is a process that comes from within the individual (from the inside), and requires a commitment from that individual to move forward in some way as a teacher. One of the ways of doing so is through the improvement of our speaking skills. As language teachers, teaching a “language”, we must try to develop our fluency and proficiency in the language.
