Men: Afflicted; Obsessed; Silently suffering. Society has always objectified women but as we move forward into a culture of masculinity, we see that men are plagued too. The obsessions can lead to extreme measures as seen in Ted Spiker’s article, “How Men Really Feel about Their Bodies,” where he argues that men in today’s society have grown equally concerned about their bodies and share common ideals are but are driven by different forces. Spiker goes beyond social silence and voices the “8 Fundamental Truths” that men need society to know about. Confidence, good looks, and health are motivational forces that feed the hunger for a better body (555).
Additionally, the author describes that hiring only those with good looks can run into antidiscrimination problems. Greenhouse concludes by suggesting that hiring for image leads to the increased prices of product, increased sales of products, and can give the impression of authenticity which eventually leads to what businesses want, profit. Whether retailers should hire only who project certain image it might be morally wrong or not is a provocative question. After considering the evidence presented in Greenhouse’s article and my own experiences, I can fully support retailers company hire only attractive applicants. I am opposed to companies hiring applicants based on their physical appearances in part because hiring good looking people is an advantage to the company, it shows how people are treated differently based on their appearance. To illustrate, Mr. Serrano, a former Abercrombie and Fitch employee emphasizes that, “We were supposed to approach someone in the mall who we think will look attractive in our store.” (p2).
That is, until it’s time to take a major test! Then, you’ll find that the nerds really come in handy! Last but not least one of the most noticeable differences in jocks and nerds is their appearance… Jocks tend to be more trendy and up-to-date when it comes to fashion. Nerds, well they seem to be quite the opposite… A jock is most likely to be dressed in a lot of name brands, showing off his money and his physical features. But when you think of a nerd you think of a guy with shiny shoes, a button down shirt, and his pants pulled up way too high!
Perhaps most influential are perceptions around male masculinity. As it is seen unmanly to discuss weakness, mental issues become masked and often go undiagnosed. Recognizing these barriers is only the first step to overcoming illnesses that might be weighing on a man’s mind. Greater understanding of new and emerging mental illnesses for men is equally as important, and hopefully the following will help to raise your awareness. Depression and suicide Researchers estimate that at least 6 million men suffer from depression each year in the United States.
Featured in a Men's Health magazine a familiar advertisement is placed the Old Spice advertisements, which always involve the idea of masculinity and a clear message that without their product you are a lesser man and clearly targeting young men who are trying to establish their personal identities. In the advertisement we have a young man depicted in his normal non-old spice using form and his other half is shown much more aggressive, talented and wild. The “manly” side also has several kiss marks lefts over his entire body. This suggests without the old spice he would not be able to reach the attention of the opposite sex. What also catches the readers attention is the print, “smell better than yourself”.
Aaron Devor explores how these factors, gender behavior and various entertainments, potentially affect everyone in “Becoming member of society: Learning the social meanings of gender.” Not only do Kilbourne’s ads ridicule men by showing the obsession of males, but also the other two authors show how other modern society’s entertainments are meant to ridicule men and most importantly women with their acts of violence and sexuality. The males are the majority species that get hurt through music we hear and programs we watch, whereas advertisements hurt females. The entertainments substantially imply most men are violent, and the advertisements imply women as material objects. In A sense, men and women learning the consequences of violence and sexuality in daily life would help them to find a common ground with another built on respect and compassion because both genders are getting hurt
Men were seen as superior to woman for the fact that they were the ones with jobs, and the college degrees. The author however depicts Scout as clever because she does not believe the theory of hot steams. On the other hand Jem is smart because he tricks Scout into getting into the tire. Jem was born a hero shows that the author favors Jem because of his gender. So in all the author not only conforms to stereotype of woman but also men in a positive and negative way.
In the Steve Greenhouse’s article, “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination”, he states “Hiring attractive people is not necessarily illegal, but discriminating on the basis of age, sex, and ethnicity is.” Big name brand companies have found a successful way to gain more customers, by hiring young and attractive college kids. Retailers find outside beauty more valuable than what is on the inside. Marshall Cohen says “A guy wants to go hang out in a store where he can see good-looking gals”, and I could not agree more. As a business owner you would want it to become very successful, some are willing to do anything to achieve that. Abercrombie and Fitch are one of them.
Physicians treat sexual dysfunctions in males and females using testosterone therapy in men and women. This therapy does help increase the desire for sexual activity in some cases. Viagra is used for men and usually is successful, the results of Viagra for women has not been as successful as for men (Nevid, & Rathus, 2005). As discussed before phases of sexual response cycle are excitement phase, plateau phase, the orgasmic phase, and the resolution phase. Each of these phases plays an important part of a healthy sexual relationship.
Men would work with each other, get in shape together, and congregate only with each other. This eventually lead men to the belief that women were somehow morally corrupt, and lead to the practice of bi-sexuality. Men saw these relationships as wholesome, and were the epitome of love. They believed it helped two men achieve perfection of body, mind and
