Introduction The understanding and use of appropriate Guidance and Discipline techniques is essential in helping children learn self-control and begin taking responsibility for their own behavior. Children begin at birth to develop patterns of behavior that can last a lifetime. It is important that they be equipped with the skills needed for self-control, to make good choices and to get along with others. Child care professionals play an important role in helping young children develop the skills and behaviors that will form the basis of a happy and productive life, including success in school. Objectives As a child care professional you will have many opportunities to assist children in developing patterns of behavior. The way you choose to teach children about how to behave is critical in their development and in establishing a calm loving child care environment. This module will provide you with information that will help you understand the difference between discipline and punishment. Through actual examples, you will be able to identify how discipline and punishment are different and learn the strategies and techniques needed to guide a child’s behavior in a positive manner, using respect, kindness, and understanding.
