Basic Concepts of Arts

I. Elements of Art (The essential parts of art)

1. Line - is a moving point.
2. Shape - is the outline of a figure or its external form.
Example: circle, oval, rectangle, pentagon, decagon
3. Form - is the visible shape.
4. Space - is a three dimensional area or your void.
5. Texture - is the perceived surface quality of art.
6. Value - is the degree of lightness or darkness.
7. Color - is the visual perceptual property corresponding in humans.

These elements must work together to create art.

Importance of the Art Elements:

1. A person cannot create art without utilizing at least a few of them.
NO ELEMENTS. NO ART. END OF STORY.
2. The elements of art enables us to describe what an artist has done.
3. The elements of art enables us to analyze what is going on in a particular piece.
4. The elements of art enables us to communicate our thoughts and findings.

Knowing the elements of art allows you to analyze, appreciate, write, and talk about art, as well as being of help should you create art yourself.

II. Medium ( Refers to the materials used by the artist.)

Example of Medium: Stone, Pigment in painting, Wood, Brick, Steel, Marble, Bronze, Sound in Music, and Words in literature.

Classification of Medium Art:
1. Visual Art - mediums that can be seen and which occupy space.
a. Dimensional Art - painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography
b. Three Dimensional Art - Sculpture , Architecture, Landscape, Ceramic Craft and Furniture Making Craft

2 . Auditory Art - mediums that can be heard and which are expressed in time. These are music and literature.

III. Technique (The Manner how the artist controls his medium)

IV. Subject of Art (The one who is represented or what is being represented)

Two Types of Art Subject:

1. Representational Art or Objective Art (Real)
