Basic Approaches to Leadership Monique Nooks BMGT 211 June 3, 2009 When we hear the word “Leadership, we instantly think about Leaders. The topic of leadership has generated excitement and interest since ancient times. Leadership is essential for organization success. Also, leadership is complex, in which it is studied in different ways that require different definitions. In this paper, I will be discussing what is leadership, why leadership is important, are leaders made or born, a variety of leadership theories, the four major factors in leadership, the different types of leaders, global implications, and summary and implications for managers. So what is Leadership? According to the text book and class discussion, Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set goals. When I researched Leadership from another text book I have titled Leadership- Theory, Application & Skill Development by Robert N. Lussier and Christopher F. Achua, they defined Leadership as the influencing process of leaders and followers to achieve organization objectives through change. As you can see, the two definitions are similar. From the Leadership text book, their definition of leadership, the influencing process is between leaders and followers, which mean that it’s not just a leader influencing followers; it’s a two-way street.” Knowing how to lead and developing leadership skills will make you a better leader and follower” (Lussier & Achua, 2007). Leadership is referred to in the context of formal organizational settings in business corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations in this text book. As we look more into leadership, we wonder why it is important. There are a few reasons why leadership is important.
