Barriers to Effective Communication There are numerous barriers that stand in the way between individuals that negatively affect communication among those individuals. The process of communication can be summed up as a transmission of a message from the sender to the receiver. Effective communication is important in one’s personal life along with the business world (Sanchez, N). Effective communication is important in the business world because how one communicates will affect the profit that the business makes, and bad profit could break a business. If the business is trying to sell a new toy and they are trying to persuade their audience the business would want someone who knew how to communicate effectively or else the new product would not sell. Some authorities believe that there as many as seven different components within the communication process. However, this paper will only discuss the five basic components. Communication requires the transmission of an idea, sending that idea through a medium, receiving that message, understanding the idea behind the message, and being able to provide feedback to the sender of the message (Wallace, H., & Robertson, C. 2009). Active listening while communicating is a beneficial task to learn. We listen for various reasons such as obtaining information, enjoyment, to learn and understand. If one can listen appropriately many valuable skills could be learned such as how to be a better negotiator, improve productivity, take better orders, and even persuade. “Good communication skills require a high level of self-awareness. By understanding your personal style of communicating, you will go a long way towards creating good and lasting impressions with others” (Active Listening, 1996-2011).
