Bragg CJS/304 August 8, 2011 Carl Miedich Barriers to Effective Communication Effective communication is one of the most important aspects within the judicial system. Society has a diversity of race, gender, personalities, neighborhoods, businesses etc. In order to prosper within society, we need to be able to communicate. Communication plays a vital role. Being able to understand and identify the communication process, barriers, gender differences, elements, and techniques are all fundamentals of communication. Effective communication is a two-way process. One must be able to send the right message while also ensuring the message is received correctly and understood by other people. According to Effective-communication.net ( 2008-2011), “For communication to be effective, it is important to understand how the people you are interacting with may interpret your message” (Effective Communication Methods, para. 1). Effective communication is an essential component of organizational success. Being able to transmit information effectively to an individual or even a group of individuals can be a very difficult process. One must familiarize themselves with some of the barriers to effective communication in order to bypass them. Communication involves three components: verbal messages, Para verbal messages, and nonverbal messages. Verbal messages refer to the words we use. Para verbal messages refer to how we say the words chosen within verbal messages. Such as are we crying, calm, in the middle of a heated argument, etc. The last component; nonverbal messages, refer to our body language. Body language includes but is not limited to eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, etc. All three components must be used to: send clear, concise messages;
