Unit one: Understanding effective communication and interpersonal skills Introduction Throughout health and social care there are many barriers and milestones within communication that are there for a professional within the establishment to overcome. These things can incllude environmental barriers, physically barriers, intellectual barriers and many others that all come into place in the health and social care setting. Within my assignment not only will I be looking at these barriers but I will be explaining them, evaluating them and looking at a case study and analysing how they can be overcome. Case study Mrs Singh is due to be discharge home shortly after having had major bowel surgery. You and other members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) are holding a meeting where they can discuss what is next for Mrs Singh. Present at the meeting are: Mr Singh, the ward nurse,the district nurse, the social worker, the Doctor a physiotherapist, a Dietician and an Occupational therapist. The meeting's aim is to look at and organise the discharge package for Mrs Singh during a busy lunch time in the ward's day room. The MDT are seated around the table on high chairs while Mr and Mrs Singh are sat on much lower 'Patients seats'. The Singh's speak very little English and there is a lot of background noise from the ward and the main lights are also flickering. The ward nurse begins the meeting and has to raise her voice to be heard over the environmental noise. She also appears to be rather aggressive. The MDT begin to discuss Mrs Singh's case using a lot of medical terminology. As the discussion progresses the conversation begins to speed up as time is limited and the doctor needs to leave shortly. During the meeting the Doctor himself appears to be very uninterested.
