Abstract The purpose of the module two case study is to write a two to three page narrative essay on how the artists paintings reflects the culture and ideology of the Baroque Era. Baroque Era The Baroque is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance and music. The style began around 1600 in Rome Italy and spread to most of Europe. Ideology I believe that success of the Baroque Era was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church after the Council of Trent met in 1545 to further define the churches theology, doctrine and beliefs in response to the growing Protestant movements. Also during this time there was a scientific revolution with new ideas creating conflicted with church doctrine. These ideas of newly discovered science were being translated in painting, such as church astrological and astronomical depictions being correct to the ideas of Galileo’s discoveries. In reaction to the growing anti-Semitism, the church decided that art should have more religious themes with direct emotional associations to the church. In France Baroque art was used to serve the monarchy more than the church, glorifying Frances kings with eloquent paintings and inspiring palaces like Versailles. Culture Many of the techniques used in Baroque painting carried on from the Renaissance, using ideas such as chiaroscuro and linear perspective.
