No books should ever be banned because for each book that is banned, there possibly could be one life lesson that will not be learned by the next generation. Censorship of books in schools and libraries is wrong for it limits what students can potentially learn. Books such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, Of Mice and Men, and others teach valuable life lessons, which is why they are considered classics. Books such as these are being banned for they have questionable material. In the same book introduction as the opening quote, Judy Blume wrote, “Those who were most active in trying to ban books cam from the ‘religious right’ but the impulse to censor spread like a contagious disease.
Censorship of School Libraries Every minor has the right to read about reality. In today’s world, library censorship has caused a lot of arguments. One of the most debatable forms of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Books with artistic and cultural value are still challenged every day by those who want to control what others read.
Stevenson Swanson wrote the article, and in the document i noticed that Krug was against censorship in books. He mentions that he does believe that parents should have the decision on what books there child reads, "but that right
` “The high court said in a 5 to 4 decision announced Thursday that the deterrent effect of such drug testing was enough to overcome fourth amendment privacy protections.” b. The fourth amendment also stops the government from searching suspicious less people unless they have a reason for drug testing. c. Court decides that the fourth amendment privacy laws could be overcome when there is a special need that could justify drug testing. d. “Schools have a responsibility to respect students privacy, so it is Vital that only the people who need to know the test results see them. The results should not be shared with anyone else, not even teachers.” e. Schools are beginning to invade teens and parents lives with trying to protect the students lives.
THE VALUE OF THE GODFATHER In the article “What is the value of The Godfather?” David Clemens states that reading great literature may inspire students to behave as well as what they read. However, some books may have less value than the others may because it would lead the reader to a bad way in life. In addition, some books as Unabomber’s Manifesto, The Anarchist’s Cookbook, and American Psycho would not give any value to the reader, but they glamorize violence, drug use, or other illegal or immoral activity. For this reason, David Clemens agrees that The Godfather should not be made available in our public high school. I agree with David Clemens about banning The Godfather in our public high schools because the violent and criminal scene of the book as well as bringing the wrong impression to high school students that we embrace the intolerance worldviews in the Godfather First, The Godfather novel might present readers a great insight of the real world, yet this image is too violent to be taught for high school students.
The two writers I included in this paper Andrew Ofstad and Ursula Le Guin have similar and different ideas on how technology can affect literature, but also if reading maybe declining in society. I don't focus so much on if reading is declining; I focus if technology is really detrimental to reading and learning to society. I think it is important to see that reading is important for learning, but technology also has a way for people to read and learn as well. I don't expect you as the reader to agree with my own conclusion, but to decide on your own opinion on the matter after reading my essay. Andrew Ofstad's "America's Decline in Literacy Reading: Grappling with Technology's Effects on the Print of Culture" and Ursula Le Guin's "Staying Awake: Notes on the Alleged Decline of Reading" are both essays that focus on the decline of reading in society.
Suspension and expulsion is not an effective tool and solution in our schools because it can lead to dropout rates and other violent crimes in the future. If a student commits a crime and the crime is not considered to be threatening, it is most likely that the principal or teacher may suspend that student. To the student suspension is a good thing for them since they have to just stay at home and do nothing. When students get expelled or suspended so many times, it seems normal to them, so they would not feel the consequences of the discipline and the purpose of it. Dropout rates and other violent crimes may contribute from continuous suspension and expulsion.
Some also argue that students who aren't doing anything wrong have nothing to fear. This ignores the fact that what they fear is not getting caught, but the loss of dignity and trust that the drug test represents. While they think they may be helping by trying to keep students from using drugs they actually may be hurting there self esteem. Our legal system is based on the principle innocent until proven guilty, but doesn't random mean that there is no reason to suspect anything? I think it's wrong because random searches will just lead to profiling which isn’t right.
Consider this example: “I believe that computers should be banned due to the risk they pose to all mankind in the potential for an electronic anti-human revolt.” This sentence is phrased as a personal opinion rather than an authoritative statement. Most readers, however, expect a paper to present an authoritative and factually supported thesis, not a mere opinion. In general, this use of I should be avoided. Second-Person Pronouns - You There is nothing inherently wrong with addressing the reader as you in a formal paper. However, for most readers, you carries a tremendous sense of informality, and in a sentence that gives advice or demands action, it may seem outright aggressive.
The designated smoke areas sounded like a good idea at first so that smokers would have specific places to smoke under certain rules. No one wants a dirty campus that can be caused by careless smokers that throw their cigarette butts all over campus. Non-smokers can be affected by second-hand smoke and also the health of certain students would be at risk. With this being said it would work better if people would follow the rules and stop being careless. An opposing view might say that a smoke-free campus is not a big issue to deal with.
