English essay, “Hills Like White Elephants” The short story is called “Hills like white elephants” and is written by Ernest Hemingway. The short story was released in 1927, in the collection “Men Without Women”. The two main characters of the short story are “the American”, and a woman which he refers to as Jig. “The American” is a man who at first seems polite and accommodating. This is at the beginning of the story, where he keeps telling Jig that, it’s alright if she, “doesn’t want to do it”. But then when you read more into the story, he keeps getting more and more annoying, because he keeps saying to her that it’s alright if she doesn’t want to, and as you can see on Jig, she begins to grow annoyed with him, even if it might not be his intention. If you look at the story from a different perspective, “the American” could be thought as very cunning. Because if you see the girl as being pregnant, “the American” is tricking her into saying yes/agreeing to get an abortion, which is what he wants. The woman or Jig is friendly and kind. Jig also seems to be distracted by everything, and doesn’t really want to listen to anything “the American” is talking about. This is because of the delicate topic they are talking about. The only things that Jig is talking about, is things that are irrelevant to the situation at hand, which is a way for her to push aside the discussion, or rather disagreement between the two of them. The landscape has quite the significance, by covering up the real motive of the story. For example the reference to the “white elephants”, which you would think is just her, describing the landscape (the mountains), but she really talks about a baby, and what it looks like. So throughout the story they always refer to the baby as the white elephants, and when they talk about “the operation” they are really talking about her abortion, and how it will go
