Back to Front - English Essay

Back to Front We were given an assignment and we were told to write an essay based on the novel “Back to Front”. The novel “Back to Front” is about a boy who’s born Topsy-turvy – yet only on the inside. The novel has a lot of themes, and just to name a few of them would themes like being different, wanting attention and basically fitting poorly into a community be very clear to any reader. This is particularly evident at page 2, first section. “At school, his teachers found him to be a small, sharp peak; slippery and unassailable. He was so convinced of his own superiority. And the other children had no interest in anatomy, or where exactly the heart was located...” and “At first he’d emphasized his difference and this had made the other children hate him. So he wouldn’t fit. Didn’t want to either. And then they teased, insulted and derided him. So then he couldn’t fit, even if he’d cared to. But finally they began to ignore him. He became a blank. A nil. A nothing.” Nick is the protagonist, and we almost hear nothing about the other characters. Nick is the boy who’s born topsy-turvy, and he feels different from the other kids in school. When he was born, he was one of a kind – the doctors first. His heart was on the right-hand side of his body and all his other organs too. Grace – Nick’s mother thinks that she and Nick are very ordinary (p. 2, l. 52) “...not ordinary like she and Nick were”. She’s overprotecting Nick (p. 1, l. 35-39) “Nevertheless, every day she counted his fingers and his toes just to make sure...” – which actually does more harm than good to Nick. He got teased and he was a nil in school, and maybe that’s why he decides that now he wants attention, good or bad, it makes no difference. You don’t have to be different – you can do different, which we certainly must say he does, when he starts to turn himself in for crimes he actually didn’t
