Jennifer Haskovec MGT360 – Week 1 Assignment 2 1. How do customers judge the quality of a supermarket? As a customer of a supermarket, I judge many different aspects of the supermarket. The first aspect is cleanliness. If a supermarket is not clean, how can I believe that uncovered items, such as deli meat and fruits and veggies, are not a product of their environment? Even the meat department would be questionable, as cuts of meat are prepared. Cleanliness is a major aspect of how I judge a supermarket. Another way I judge a supermarket is the convenience of items. An example of this is the placement of items and how easy they are to find. Are they clearly marked? If a customer walks out of a supermarket not satisfied with even the tiniest aspect, that customer will share their experience with others. Word of mouth is vital. Forecasting – Forecasting is not only good for the customer, but a great tool in having the right brands available at the right times. A manager has to be able to predict, or forecast, what trends will be to ensure that his/her brands of purchases will be profitable over a long period of time. If an incorrect choice is made with a substantial purchase, a loss could be obtained when having to mark the goods down for sale. Capacity planning – A manager has to be aware of how much inventory will fit in the store. Especially in supermarkets, items are placed in certain areas, such as freezers and refrigeration units that further limit capacity. If a manager orders more than his/her store can hold, there is overstock, and a chance to not gain a profit off of the goods completely.
