Srp question 3-progress in the production of artificial blood, use evidence to propose reason why this research is needed Intro There is a continuing shortage of donor blood to help the victims of emergencies, civil and international conflicts and natural disasters. Artificial blood is a product made to act as a substitute for red blood cells. While true blood serves many different functions, artificial blood is designed for the sole purpose of transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body. Depending on the type of artificial blood, it can be produced in different ways using synthetic production, chemical isolation, or recombinant biochemical technology. Body biological process There are two major methods that are being used to produce artificial blood Perfluorocarbons (PFC) and Haemoglobin-based products. Perfluorochemicals are chemically inert synthetic molecules that consist primarily of carbon and fluorine atoms, and are clear, colourless liquids. They have the ability to physically dissolve significant quantities of many gases including oxygen and carbon dioxide. The entire process takes 12-14 hours with close to a 100% yield of product and can be done so at a large scale without much cost. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the other tissues in the body. Artificial blood based on hemoglobin takes advantage of this natural function. Unlike PFC products where dissolving is the key mechanism, oxygen covalently bonds to hemoglobin.
