NCLB set forth a certain criteria to be met, but allowed the states to determine how they would accomplish it. Therefore, each state handles assessment and accountability differently. This makes it hard to show success or failure of the programs. Supporters and critics alike can cite research that supports their opinion. The reader can blatantly see that Prose thinks negatively of the high school curriculum that today's students face. It seems clear that Prose does not want to hide her personal view or feelings, so she starts her essay out in a way that we do not have to read between the lines to get a sense of how she feels about what she is writing. Taking Responsibility For Education Students rely on a number of things in their pursuit of a higher education; teachers, accredited institutions, and textbooks containing correct information. James Loewen, who wrote Lies My Teacher Told Me, brings up concerns for students stating US History lower-learning textbooks are not equipped with factual information. In Loewen’s text he brings to light some very significant US events he believes are not factual. When we think of studying history we think about learning specific dates, events, or wars that impacted our country. Not many people stop to question if the information they are reading or being taught is factual.
Many teachers do not like “catching plagiarists and bringing them to academic justice.” As she states, it is not hard to just cite the author that originally had the information you are using (Bojar). Plagiarism is becoming a big problem in the school system. Many students do not understand what needs to be cited and what does not. The school system should teach students the proper way to cite, and they should teach them that copy and pasting is not writing a paper. According Bojar to students at the community college have a hard time juggling classes along with his or her family and a job.
But this injures students educationally as well. While the rest of the world references Vietnam in many of today’s situations or debates on whether Iraq is the next Vietnam and other issues, high school students are left out of the loop because their high school textbooks and teachers refuse to teach them what they should learn, what they ought to learn. High school students are hurt the most because of this. While textbook authors and editors are not likely to break away from the template soon, they should at least find a way around the system to provide pictures and information that would give students sufficient knowledge on the topic of Vietnam. Erica Goldson Valedictorian Speech Response Erica Goldson brought up a very controversial and very interesting topic about our current education system in the US. She states that students are so focused at memorizing data and getting good grades, that they miss out on the whole idea of learning and being educated. I agree with her, students should be learning and absorbing the material, instead of memorizing for the next big test and just forgetting about it later on. Graduating seems like the top priority in students nowadays, and to me that is just upsetting. And the students who are very talented and are very motivated to learn and be driven in a non-academic subject seem to have a more negative image than the people who are driven by academics.
Yelling is not the right way to teach a child that they just did something wrong. When you explain to a child in a positive yet strict way that their actions were not pleasing, they perceive the information so much better than when being yelled at. Just like with my own children, I always reassured my classroom children that even though they made a bad decision, I still love them. The challenge didn’t come from my own classroom, the challenges came from the guardians. Through our program, we had to have several “workshops” with the guardians each year.
