How does her recent work Whisper, the Waves, the Wind (fig. 61) compare? Be sure to watch the online video on Suzanne Lacy (found in the Web Links section) before answering this question. The statement: “The art is making it compelling; the politics is in making it clear” is a very distinct statement made by Lacy. I think she meant that the art of her statement is what draws her crowd in and the politics of her statement is what keeps her crowd watching.
Robert Ades English 1B Professor Scott 9/21/12 A Work for Artifice For the interpreting poetry essay, the poem which stood out the most is “A Work of Artifice,” by Marge Piercy because of her use of metaphors and imagery on how society can influence and control the population’s behavior, mainly woman. In this poem by Piercy, there is no specific speaker because the poem is told in a third person omniscient point of view. However, it is obvious that Piercy is this omniscient narrator and much of her literature is about the oppression of women. In her poem, she uses the bonsai tree as a metaphor for women. Using terms regarding to gardening, she tells the story of how society stunts the natural growth of the female population by stereotyping them while they are young.
Distinctively visual techniques are fundamental in the transmission of stimulating ideas between composers and responders of their texts. They are able to communicate the distinctive experiences within their texts that affect the responder and their relationships with others and the world. In the context of WW2, John Misto’s play The Shoe Horn Sonata conveys the experiences of the suffering of the female prisoners of war. It is Misto’s intention to portray the oppression the women suffered and highlight the power of art in their journey to hope and purpose. These ideas are also explored through Gary Ross’ film, Pleasantville as the protagonists fight against oppression of society’s expectations and the power of art as a way of escaping this and finding a purpose and a sense of hope.
The visual weight of the vivid green leaves in the background jump out and catch the eye. This self-portrait shows the beauty that surrounded her in the busy visual field. The print I chose is “The Widow” which by Kathe Kollwitz. I found this print on page 178 of the textbook. This portrait is woodcut in monotone black .
Her characters have exaggerated features which make them cartoonist, and in doing so she adds some humor to the dense subject matter of racism, or power. Kara Walker’s main inspiration is the pre-civil war south. Her art work depicts this time in a skewed fashion. This thought is what makes her art so interesting. She is able to portray history in her own unique way that makes it interesting again to the viewers.

Art Brenda artist Brenda began her artistic work in the 1980's as a graphic designer, operating her own design firm with clients throughout the state of Colorado, where she lives. During this time she also became known in the area for the historic murals she painted with private and public commissions, and for her work as President of the Berthoud Arts and Humanities Alliance, lending her support to other Colorado artists. Preferring a new direction from commercial expression, she has recently begun to devote her talents to subjects with personal meaning, and her artistic work now reflects a passion for inner examination. Dream images have quite clearly captivated this artist's imagination and provide an unending source of inspiration for her paintings. It is Brenda's desire to express the mystery of the psyche's inner world and the power of dreams to impact and change our lives.
When War and Oil Ended the world There is no denying Joy Harjo uses poetry to get her inner thoughts out so that the world can read and cherish her poetry. She is a big writer on politics, and her Native American heritage. Joy’s poetry can be said to use language as a way to move people toward an Idea or action (Goodman). With that being said there are many of her poems that express her feelings but the one that will be focused on the most is “When the world As We Knew It Ended”. This poem uses a lot of imagery with what is being said, not only is there a story being said, there is a statement.
Her art pertains to surrealism, and relates to fantasy, horror, female sexuality, and the subconscious. Gaskell’s work fixates in the mind somewhere between our dreams and our child-hood memories. Although each of her photo series contains a reoccurring story, she confuses the viewer by simultaneously taking the photographs. The narrative events resemble a journey without a beginning or end, which is what sparks many interpretations. Unlike many photographers, Gaskell’s work is a metaphor for something else and instead illustrates the manipulation, and dark side of adolescent girls by using ongoing themes of identity, sexuality, and curiosity.
The Post Impressionism Era artists used techniques derived from the Impressionism Era, but also showed passion in their art.
