The ART of INTERROGATION In this paper I am going to discuss what the word “Interrogation” means to me. Generally speaking the word interrogation means to build rapport while asking a series of controlled questions to induce a source into revealing valuable information. Being a graphic designer/artist, I portray interrogations as being a form of art. Artists creatively express themselves in various forms of visual art. Like an artist, interrogators creatively express themselves in verbal ways to obtain information from sources, thus allowing the interrogator to paint a mental picture of what they believe to be true. The main tactic of an interrogation is to influence a source’s decision to provide you with information with the intent that it will facilitate his early release. In essence, an interrogator will provide a false sense of hope to facilitate a faster release of more information. This tactic can also be known as a fine art of persuasion. Interrogations also allow the interrogator to connect pieces of information by means of analyzing the dispositional nature of an individual’s knowledge, skill, ability, capability, motivation, placement and access. As an interrogator in the U.S. Army you have a personal responsibility to verbally bond with your source to ensure that his safety is held top priority, which not only keeps your source alive but most important yourself. Using the term “verbally bond” basically means that as a professional interrogator your source needs to feel a sense of trust in you without you developing any physical or emotional attachments. Maintaining minimal attachments not only keeps your mind optimistic, but it allows you to better access the situation. The most important part of interrogating is listening. A good interrogator doesn’t just hear what the source is telling him, he actually listens to what is being said
