Alexa Neumann Everyone is Selfish Humans are mysterious creatures. We do things that sometimes even ourselves cannot understand. It baffles me that as a species, we seem to be okay with not knowing why we do the things we do. Surely some people do try to break down human nature, such as psychologists and behaviorists and such. But our society as a whole seems to not care about how we as humans act towered each other. I have realized though personal experience and though a bit of research, that humans are ultimately selfish because of the high occurrence of infidelity and all it entails, and physiological egotism. To begin with, the prime example of being selfish starts with the outstanding numbers of people who commit infidelity. According to the book Sexual Detours: Infidelity and Intimacy at the Crossroads, Dr. Holly Hein states that, “the percentage of people who admit to committing infidelity in any relationship they've had is approximately 57 percent in males, and 54 percent in females.”(Hein 42) That is just the case in marriage alone, and back in the year 2000. It seems to me that even when two people are not married, couples ten to cheat on their partners even more often. I’m not a certified sociologist or anything like that, but I am however a nineteen year old young woman, and have seen plenty of occurrences of infidelity when couples were just dating. The way I see it cheating is cheating. The fact that I occasionally hear the phrase “it’s not cheating if you’re not married” cements the fact the humans can be truly selfish. The reason cheating on someone is an act of selfishness, despite whether or not you’re married, is the fact that a commitment has been broken. When you are married, or just in a relationship, it is a known fact that you are committed to one another. It doesn’t matter if you call it adultery, infidelity, or just messing around, it
