Are You Ready, Boots? An Essay In a relationship is it important that you find the balance between being yourself and change for the one you love. The deeper you go into a relationship you might realize that you have been blinded by material comforts into a shallow partner's life. These superficial persons may not truly love the one you are within but only the one you appear to be. Could this be the case in the short story "Are You Ready, Boots?" where Lulu tells about her relationship with Charlie? The story is told by a first person narrator from the main character Lulu's point of view. Ms. Alderson probably choose this point of view to make the story focus on how Lulu perceives the people around her and show how it changes through the story. The story is also written in past tense and Lulu comments on the development of the story herself in a way so you get the feeling that Lulu is retelling a valuable life lesson to the reader. The main character Lulu is a spontaneous girl who likes to party and standout as attractive but she is still a somewhat mature woman who thinks about her future and to settle down. She is a little conflicted between choosing to live in the present or think more long-sighted and rational. E.g. in lines 24-25 (...) while the sensible side of my brain tried to reason with the champagne-fuddled one (...). Lulu keeps comparing herself to famous independent women. She looks up to them and wants to take on the world and appear like them. She wants to be independent but she has one weakness though and that is her vanity. Spencer is Lulu's good friend. There are many hints that he might be a homosexual. E.g. how Lulu describes how Charlie looks at her in line 69 And I could tell by that look
