ARE WE A PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY? The progressive can be looked from a typical dictionary definition that says “progressive” is an adjective that shows it as a move to a place of greater effectiveness, which is not similar to the position that we were earlier in. Going by this definition India over the last decade has definitely shown visible threads of movement. However, the question that remains in our minds is that is we truly progressive as a society or are we masquerading a face to the world where we want to show them how progressive we are!! Progression in society according to me can never be an isolated event. It has got to be a conglomeration of events in the social, political and cultural spheres of society. According to me if society were to progress on its own then the world today would have been a wonderful place to exist. In our country according to me the greatest struggles have been the retention of our string value systems , yet putting on a progressive picture to the world. The question is; “Why does a Society need to progress?” Societal progress according to me is a reality that a nation has to confront. In post independent India there has been a slow movement in age groups. The older generation is slowly moving into dusk and the dawn is being heralded by a generation of younger people. Themes of “Sati”, values of dependence and loyalty have slowly given way to the more progressive values of Independence and Equality. The needs of the generation of Indians that are going to be the future of the nation are very different from that of the Indians 40 years back. Progression according to me needs to be feature of any society .Any Society that is faced with an extent of globalization that we see today needs to reinvent itself .And India has or at least has showed intentions of moving on that path of reinvention.
