Many teachers, game manufacturers, parents, children, and of course psychologists, have debated this for many years - are video games affecting our children in a positive or negative way? Video Games have been around for many years, and they are getting more and more addictive, immersive, and accessible. Today you can find video games nearly everywhere; they are in practically every child's home in one way or another, you can find them on mobiles, arcades, Digital TVs, portable game consoles and of course normal games consoles. So, is this a good thing or not? Let's look at some of the proven affects video games have on you, both good and bad. The first example is that video games can affect many different skills. E.g. sports, music and art. Also, performance in school can be affected if homework and reading are neglected. Kids often rush, or skip homework assignments so they can play video games instead. They also will quit playing sports, playing a musical instrument, or engaging in artistic activities so they can have more time to play video games. This decreases a kid's grades, heath, and artistic/musical abilities. Gaming takes away from other academically enriching activities, like reading a novel or practicing math problems, so it does relate to lower academic performance. When kids play video games frequently, they also have a tendency to get used to the fast pace and interactive style of video gaming. This can usually make other activities, such as reading, can become “under-stimulating” to them. This same reasoning is the cause for a loss of interest in music, art, and sports. If played constantly, video games can stop important social interactions between family and friends. The only reason they may want to talk to friends is to find out about 'Secret Cheat Codes' and other video-game related topics. This may result in lack of skills in
