Are Social Networks Good for our Society? INF 103 May 29, 2012 Are Social Networks Good for our Society? The topic that I am researching is Social Networking. The reason I chose this topic is because I wanted to know what is so interesting about these sites and why our society chooses to socialize over the internet instead of in person. I believe that social networking has multitude of pros and cons and it is based on how it is used. I also feel that social networking can be helpful as well as harmful based on whom is using it and how it is being used. Social networks allow people to connect for a variety of reasons in a digital environment. Professionals might join LinkedIn to meet business contacts, MySpace to find a band member, or Facebook to see pictures of old friends and meet new ones. My husband and I are a perfect example. We have Facebook accounts, however, I only used it to communicate with my husband while he was deployed to Afghanistan when the military’s communication systems were down. Whatever environment you decide to be a part of, posting information about yourself has become a worldwide phenomenon and has raised some serious issues of concern. Some of the concerns with these sites are: being hacked, these sites store your data and share your personal information to third parties, stalking issues, identity theft, sexual predators, and employment concerns. Employers are now using these sites to investigate what type of person they will potentially be hiring. Posting information on social networks is becoming an issue of concern for people who use these sites regularly. Some of the concerns with these sites are being hacked, which generally leads to identity theft. Some sites store your data and share your personal information with third parties.
