Are Great Leaders Born or Made Are great leaders born or made? Historically it would appear that the greatest leaders were born and their destiny would prevail to allow them to lead people in government, business, religion, military, and other social ways. Royalty certainly produced leaders through birth, but not all kings and queens were great leaders. What made some so great and others mediocre or total failures. The founding fathers that helped to form the United States were great leaders socially and militarily. Were they born to be great? They changed the course of history because of their leadership. Social and religious leaders like Martin Luther, Martin Mandela, Martin Luther King, John Paul II, and Mother Teresa made profound differences in the lives of millions of people. Were they born to be leaders? The answer could very well be yes, if this opinion was based solely on the deeds and outcomes of these leaders. But if one investigates deeper into the lives of these individuals one’s opinion could change. The great leaders early on in their lives had a vision of what the future should be. They had self-determination to make that vision happen. Great leaders were risk takers. They were not afraid of set-backs. They learned from their mistakes and did not abandon their vision, almost all of the great leaders of this world suffered losses, set-backs, and adversities that would knock the ordinary person down, but the visionaries picked themselves up and improved their minds to become great leaders. According to S.A Kirkpartrick and E.A Locke (1991), leaders are intelligent energetic people who are initiative, ambitious and willing to take responsibility.(Zhu, Abigail) John Gardner says a leader is made, not born, because with the right opportunities and training, anyone can become a leader.
