Film Analysis of “April Morning” April morning follows young Adam Cooper’s journey through the Battle of Lexington and Concord (1775). This key battle started the American Revolution with the “Shot heard round the World.” As Joseph said to Adam, “We were (all British) until today.” This one battle was ultimately the start of a new independent Nation called America. The Battle of Lexington and Concord took place in Massachusetts and occurred because of many resentments building up inside the colonists against the British Crown. These included many unfair taxes, the Quartering Act, Intolerable Acts, and many more. Additionally, the colonists were beginning to think more like independents and less like English subjects. The movie shows Solomon Chandler carrying a package of shot and guns to a colonial town. Suddenly several red coats stop him, one of witch hits him with the butt of his gun. After returning to his town a town meeting was called to discus what had happened. During the meeting they discussed their chances against the British army. Many decided they had no chance against the thousands of trained British soldiers but they also had no choice on whether or not to stand up and fight them. The main theme of April Morning is coming of age. Adam is fifteen; witch in colonial time is when boys start to become men. The only thing is his father, Moses, still looks at him like he is a boy. Everything Adam does Moses corrects him on or says something negative to discourage him. At one point in the movie Adam doesn’t even think his dad loves him, but later we find out Moses just didn’t know how to tell him he did. When the war started Adam went to enlist and his dad let him. This was his first real step to manhood. Since his father is now dead after the battle when Adam returns home took the place in is home as the man of the house. This definitely represents
