Appendectomy Melissa Montosa Gateway Community College An appendectomy is the removal of the appendix. When it is done laparoscopically, about 3 incisions are made on the abdomen. A laparoscope (camera) is inserted into one incision to be able to view on a screen and through the other incisions the other instruments are inserted to cut the appendix. There are not many risk factors when it comes to Appendicitis because the cause is unclear. There are many things that come into play when diagnosing someone with appendicitis, which is why it is important to do a thorough history and physical exam. It is more common in the young adult population and if it occurs in a person over the age of 70, there is a greater likelihood of death. According to Lewis (2011), “In appendicitis the blood supply of the appendix is impaired by inflammation and bacterial infection in the wall of the appendix, which may result in gangrene.” The patient was a 47-year-old man who was having right lower abdominal pain. He took Motrin for the pain and went to work but it only got worse so he came into the emergency department. A CT scan was done which showed that the appendix was perforated and was 8 mm in size. The mucosa was shaggy and he had bilateral renal cysts. He had inflammatory changes in his right lower abdomen. The patient was a healthy man with no past surgery or medical issues. On post op day 1 he was back to a regular diet but was not eating much. He had a normal bowel movement and his only concern before being discharged was his inability to urinate when he felt the urge that had nothing to do with the procedure. He had 3 small incisions where they had gone through laparoscopically to see inside his abdomen and remove the appendix. He was comfortable and able to sleep.
