These dangers are produced by our history. They rest on the fact that in order to conquer this continent, the particular aloneness of which I speak—the aloneness in which one discovers that life is tragic, and therefore unutterably beautiful—could not be permitted. And that this prohibition is typical of all emergent nations will be proved, I have no doubt, in many ways during the next fifty years. This continent now is conquered, but our habits and our fears remain. And, in the same way that to become a social human being one modifies and suppresses and, ultimately, without great courage, lies to oneself about all one’s interior, uncharted chaos, so have we, as a nation, modified or suppressed and lied about all the darker forces in our history.
The Corrupting Power of Women The portrayal of women in Of Mice and Men is limited and unflattering. We learn early on that Lennie and George are on the run from the previous ranch where they worked, due to encountering trouble there with a woman. Misunderstanding Lennie’s love of soft things, a woman accused him of rape for touching her dress. George berates Lennie for his behavior, but is convinced that women are always the cause of such trouble. Their enticing sexuality, he believes, tempts men to behave in ways they would otherwise not.
He is lack of freedom. The Duvitch children did not have freedom in the sense that they could not go out and play with the other kids. The Duvitches did not feel accepted until the dinner at the Duvitch that changes their location on how they are. Mr. Duvitch does not have the ability to walk around town. At, first, Mr. Duvitch has trouble to talking with people.
With people tormenting her about her cousins who were teen moms, or her father who made a fool of his drunken self in public, the poor girl felt like nothing more than dirt, and she wanted to be thought of as flawless and beautiful. Edith dreamed of being a celebrity, she wished to be a perfect girl, and to live in a perfect world "in which only married women had babies, and in which men and women stayed married forever." The shacks in which Eddie grew up were less than desirable, and supposedly thought of as contemptible, by people of a higher social class. When Edith moved to the boarding house, with set meal times, she was quite ashamed to think of how people living in the shacks didn't have meal times, they simply found any food they could and ate by themselves when they were hungry. The potato-chip plant that Eddie worked at
Her craving for it grew from day to day, and she began to waste away because she knew she could never get any” (154). This detail is quite significant because food is readily available even for those in struggle. Also, it is a bit idiotic; a woman is going mildly insane due to craving of lettuce and the lack of which she consumes. Additionally, other differences in cultural details became apparent. In modern times we all root for the “bad boy”.
But the REVLON advertisement clearly conveys why their make- up collection is best. In this ad the diction used appeals to more females. The advertiser used celebrity endorsement to persuade one to purchase their product. Susan Sarandon is a well-known actress. The close up on Susan Sarandon’s face is used to show how beautiful she is because she uses REVLON.
Since the media stresses that everyone should be thin people think that they also need to be like that (Kowalski 1). It can cause people to stop eating and make them get an eating disorder (1). It also lowers their self-esteem. Also if you do not interact with other people it can make you feel depressed or lonely. This was Jennie’s case she did not have any friends because they were all jealous of her (Cooney 104).

That depressed me.” This shows that Holden get depressed over the smallest things. This is concerning because it could lead to being depressed by bigger things. Another example is when Holden says “…I thought of her going in a store and buying it, and nobody in the store knowing she was a prostitute and all. The salesman probably just thought she was a regular girl when she bought it. It made me feel sad as hell – I don't know why, exactly”.
The Bell Jar Journals Place-Chapter five Esther is self conscious of herself and her behavior. She attends an important banquet. Dear diary, I’m so worried about that electrocution thing about the Rosenberg’s, which makes me wonder why I don’t like my job, or my brand new clothes.
