In the Appalachia region there was a dynamic change of politics from before the 1960s to after the 1960s.   Although they had their weaknesses, there were many movements such as the civil rights movement, environmental and women’s movements, and the antiwar and student movements that played a significant role in the contribution to community organization. Residents of the region would fight to prevent destruction of their land and homes by strip miners, toxic-waste dumpers, security of welfare benefits, and many other regional concerns through community organization.   Many community organizations such as the Kentuckians For The Commonwealth (KFTC), Save Our Cumberland Mountains (SOCM), and Community Farm Alliance (CFA) have prevailed since the 1960s by their focus on multi-issues.
Due to the struggles of the Appalachia region, many movements were constructed to organize resistance efforts throughout Appalachia.   The civil rights movement helped justify the concept of dispute and the approach for nonviolent civil disobedience throughout the region as well as the nation.   This allowed citizens to voice their concerns involving their home environment without taking part in violent protests.   The environmental and women’s movements made resources accessible for locals in the mountains.   They also helped motivate national legislation that helped create opportunities for local community organization that were determined to fight and save their homes from environmental destruction as well as create economical opportunities for women.   The ideas known as “progress” and “national interest” were used to describe the Appalachia region, but were questioned by the antiwar and student movements.   They questioned why these terms were used to validate the devastation of the traditional ways of life in the region.   These movements allowed for the issues that have brought destruction to Appalachia into focus so that the region would have the motivation and support to repair and...
