AP World I Homework History: 1. What types of resources might a historian use when studying past events? What is the difference between a primary and secondary resource? Provide examples. A historian might use either primary or secondary sources to gain knowledge and understanding of past events. The difference between a primary and a secondary resource is that a primary source is from someone who witnessed the event, took place in the event, or is the person who is being studied. A secondary resource is anything about the event or person being studied that did not come from a primary source. Examples of a primary source are interviews or letters from a person at the event or the person being researched, an example of a secondary resource is a statement of an expert on the subject who was not the person or the event in question. 2. What is historiography? Historiography is the writing of history, such as a paper on theories, explanations, and events based on historical things. 3. What is “event history” or “history from above?” What is “history from below?” Compare/contrast the two and discuss how this may affect one’s perspective of history. Event history is a record of the specific dates and times an event took place; this involves no theories, just facts. History from above is where the rich and powerful only were taken an interest to; everything they did was recorded and the stories and events associated with the lower class were deemed insignificant accordingly. History from below is the exact opposite; the lower class demanded to get recognized and recorded into history for what they were doing and what was happening to them as well. If one was to only read the history from above they would most likely think that everything was great in the world back then with just a few mishaps and that everyone was happy; were you to just read the
