Anthem, written by Ayn Rand in 1937, is a novel centered around a socialist city in the future. Anthem is a heroic and inspiring story about the triumph of the individual's independent spirit. This story is based on the life of Equality 7-2521, a 21 year old male. Equality lived in the dark ages of the future. In a loveless world he dared to love the women of his choice. In an age that had lost all trace of science and civilization he had the courage to seek and find knowledge. But these were not the crimes for which he would be hunted. He was marked for death because he had committed the unpardonable sin, he stood forth from the mindless human herd. He was a man alone. In this world of Equality’s no one called himself “I”. Equality 7-2521 is different, he was taught at a young age that everyone is the same and everyone will be the same till the end of eternity. Throughout the book he learns to accept that he is different than everyone else. Even though, at the end of the novel, Equality is greatly outnumbered, and modern society lies in ruins, it is a story of liberation and hope, not despair. Three great pieces of evidence describe why this book is a story of liberation and hope.

The first piece of evidence is found on page 59, “We made it. We created it. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only. We know not what we are saying. Our head is reeling. We look upon the light which we have made. We shall be forgiven for anything we say tonight. Tonight, after more days and trials than we can count, we finished building a strange thing, from the remains of the unmentionable times, a box of glass, devised to give forth the power of the sky of greater strength than we had ever achieved before. We could not conceive of that which we had created. We had touched no flint, made no fire. Yet here was light, light that came from nowhere, light from the heart of metal.
