He compares and contrasts how his life was with the Web and without it. For example, “Just as Microsoft Word had turned me into a flesh-and-blood word processor, the Internet, I sensed, was turning me into something like a high-speed data-processing machine, a human HAL (325). The Web has changed him in such a way that he felt like a machine. He wanted to stay connected, therefore, he would yearn to check his e-mail, click links, or explore on Google. He noticed the Net was having a much stronger influence over him than his PC ever had (324).
I chose the topic of the social media for many reasons. The first reason was because I like going on Facebook to chat with my friends. The second reason was because I go on Twitter all the time to see what my favorite music and movie stars are doing. The last reason I chose this topic was because I like going on social networks and so I wanted to find out how the social media affects the people that go on it and how it help spread information. Methodology I took several steps in conducting research on the social media.
Sidonia Willis Mr. Lewis Engl. 1301-018 14 October 2014 The Not-So-Social Life Many social networks have created the opportunity for people to communicate almost instantly over almost any distance. Social network’s uses have become more popular and have created a whole new world of its own. The author Brian Jung’s essay “ The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” expresses the problems that social media is creating today. He exposes the negatives effects of online use consisting of people getting Cyber bullied, the false sense of connection people receive, and people’s lack of privacy.
Nicholas Carr says, in his book, The Shallows, that because of his constant use of computers and the Internet, he has become unable to concentrate on one thing for long periods of time. He can no longer read books without losing interest in them after a few short pages. He doesn’t understand things at great depth, he looks for the shallow understanding of many things. I agree with what Carr said about what using the internet and technology has done to our ability to concentrate and focus on one thing and to read a book and understand things at a deeper level. Since using the Internet, I have noticed that when I look through magazines, I LOOK through them not read them.
There are a lot of people that I know who would do that to people just because they think they are better than most people. 6. Explain how a character in the book changes from beginning to end? Cody Janowski 12/2/10 English Comp Assignment 4 The Internet has undoubtedly changed the way people live their lives. Any information we could possibly want- and more- is at our disposal, and has made life for us incredibly convenient and easy; some, however, might say too easy. One of these people is Nicholas Carr, author of the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” featured in the July/August 2008 edition of The Atlantic. Carr argues that the Net seems to be slowly demolishing our abilities to concentrate on one subject, as well as contemplate information, based on the ease of access to everything the Internet provides today. I agree with Carr to an extent; however I would say that his theory most certainly does not apply to everyone.
Tevin Hutchinson 11/10/2012 English 102 Technology plays a huge role in our everyday life. I do believe that technology has made our lives easier, but it also has made us more dependent on the technology itself. When using the internet for a dictionary you could easily get distracted. Anyone can put anything on the internet, so what you find might not be accurate. Most people find that looking things up on the internet is distracting because you are already on the web so why not check YouTube for a funny video, or update your status on the social network.
Life has distinctly undergone some very dramatic changes ever since the dawn of the Internet era and with each passing day there is a growing dependence on it. People start to rely on the accessibility of information on social media, we rely on the internet to give us answers and retain information. Social networking including Facebook, twitter, blogs and even You Tube play a role in our education. Students who attempt to multi-task, checking their social media sites while there are studying or working on a paper lose their ability to perform the task on hand and their concentration by these distractions, I know this to be true because I can admit that I too have looked at Facebook and the internet for distractions while writing this paper. Another problem that social media creates another way for people to bully or have access to emotionally abuse others.
I like being able to connect with my friends and family through these social media sites, and know what is happening around the world at all hours of the day, However, this also means its all easy to fall victim to the alternating nature of the internet. I understand how it is easy to become addicted to the instant spark of gratification when someone likes my Facebook updates, retweets my brilliance or reposts a picture from Instagram. The danger comes when you start relying on social media for affirmation, validation and a sense of belonging that they can never fully provide. Actress Keira Knightley herself quoted “I hate the Internet. I find it dehumanizing to constantly check emails or social sites which have become so fashionable” By this she is meaning to say
1 “Kolb said that social media offers many benefits for law enforcement, such as putting out alerts about emergency situations, finding missing children and issuing crime prevention tips.” ( Jenni Bergal ). Indeed, many situations were solved by the internet in the social media. That become very familiar with everyone. If someone need help to find something, need to report something commonly, they use that type of social media. Moreover, if I was a social media advisor, I will give many advices to the others.
