Each chapter of the book focuses on one individual and focuses on their back story and how they played a crucial role towards the events and the legal actions in which it was a result pertaining to the events themselves. Chapter 1 tells the story of Anne Orthwoods, an 24 year old woman who went to Virginia to become an indentured servant for William Kendall and to which meets the love of her lift, John Kendall. During this time, illegitimacy was considered a bad thing at the time and anyone caught in a illegitimate relationship would be punished. Chapter two tells the story of William Kendall, John Kendall's uncle. In this chapter, it tells of William's history from when became an indentured servant, to becoming one of the most powerful politicians in all of Virginia. Its was from here that he had his own plantation and thus, is where John and Anne met. When Kendall receive news that Anne and John were having an forbidden relationship, he was worried that someone might discover it and will damage his status. To prevent this from ever happening, he sold her services to one of his friends who happens to be a plantation owner. Anne's new owner, Jacob Bishopp was a respectable plantation owner of Northampton County, who required her services from William Kendall. During one of Bishopp's business affairs, Anne reunites with John Kendall, and they “rekindled their romance.” During a council meeting at the Webbs Inn, Anne and John had sex and conceived twins. After a short time of her pregnancy, Bishopp sold her indenture to Colonel William Waters. Chapter three is about William Waters was a sheriff of the peace, and also a plantation owner himself. Having discovered Anne's condition, he couldn't help but feel disturbed by this because of the fact that she is useless to him. Feeling that he was cheated
