Apparently brilliant and with an excitement for learning, Phillis soon obtained an education that any free young woman from a well-off family of that time would envy. She became an avid student of the Bible and especially admired the works of Alexander Pope. Through Pope's translation of Homer, she also developed a taste for Greek mythology. On December 21, 1767, at the age of 14, Phillis Wheatley published her first poem in the Newport Mercury. This achievement came just six years after her arrival in America, without any prior knowledge of the English language.
Soon after this event in the woods, the adults began to notice the girls exhibiting strange behavior. They seemed nervous, they cried easily, and they were prone to nightmares. The first girl to be affected in the play is Ruth Putnam (Women in World History). In actuality, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams were the first two girls to be affected. As a result of Betty’s illness, Tituba was asked to bake a “witchcake” in order to figure out what was causing Betty Parris to have these strange symptoms.
These women were often rich because of what they had attained through the death of their spouses and remarriage. Women of this age usually had very tired hunched figures and bore scares from their life as working women, giving them a, by today’s standards, very witch-like look. The older women made the perfect scapegoats on which to place the failings of the society. Massachusetts law allowed for the trial of anyone suspected of witchcraft and the juries, being Puritan, were very easy to convince. False testimony also played a big part in the trials, with young men and women coming up with stories of witchcraft and other such heinous crimes.

There were many inspirational women during the 1950’s but the one woman that struck me the most was the beautiful Marilyn Monroe. If I ever had the opportunity to travel back in time to be someone else, I would choose to be her. She was an inspiration to young girls everywhere because she was so comfortable in her skin. She also took her talents to the top and became a mega star. Regardless if it’s 2012 or 1950, young girls struggle with self-confidence issues.
We are also told how women desperate to become widows would sometimes poison their husbands, letting them find eternal sleep in their arms. Both stories also mention the Salem witches, with the devil being the grand master in charge in both
