Lonesome Cowboys “The true story of what it was like to live in the Old West…a story of men among men and the women who tried to interfere.” –J.J Murphy In Andy Warhol’s Western film Lonesome Cowboys, notions of homosexuality is not hidden, but overtly expressed. Andy Warhol made a clear concept of implementing sexual desires among the main characters in the film. J.J Murphy states how, “all of the males in the cast displayed homosexual tendencies and conducted themselves towards one another in an effeminate manner.” While doing so, Warhol was able to mask that idea of intense eroticism by displaying gunshots, brawls, and round ups. This film exposes the qualities of confrontation that is usually expressed in Old Western genres. This movie was the predecessor for another movie displaying a homosexual love affair called Brokeback Mountain. Although this film broke boundaries of presenting a loving relationship with somebody of the same sex, (which caused controversy in the social world) this film was not as controversial as Warhol’s Lonesome Cowboys. Reason being? This movie was made in 1968. Revolting images of borderline porn was demonstrated in a time where sex and common genres of film did not interrelate. By Warhol breaking the boundaries of conventional filmmaking, he was able to create the unconventional interpretations of how Western films were seen. Although the mood encompasses Western ideologies, the barriers of how the narrative was presented were questioned. The narrative did not follow the official guidelines of a classic Hollywood film. Instead, confusions of who was who left the viewers in complete puzzlement. For example, there are two characters named Julian (Tom Hompertz) and Julian Borroughs (the actual actors name). During many occurrences, the actors would mix u their real and fictional names. It left no room for imagining this
