ANDHERI WORKSHOP :CASE STUDY ANALYSIS 1. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM * Mr.Becharbhai felt that his role and authority was undermined in the Andheri Workshop. 2. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PROBLEM i. Mr.Becharbhai was not consulted before hiring new apprentices. ii. Mr.Ismail trained the boys himself. iii. Mr.Becharbhai reported to Mr.Ismail that apprentices brought their own soap to wash up before leaving for home. But Ismail's inaction made Becharbhai feel his concerns being left unattended to. iv. Mr.Becharbhai reported to Mr.Ismail about Pathan and Mclean but instead of taking immediate action he enquired Pathan about this . v. Two points of contact, "Once when Pathan had taken leave from me(Ismail) for some time ,he was rebuked by Becharbhai for not informing him in advance." vi. Mr.Becharbhai told Mr.Ismail ,"For quite sometime, I have been feeling that there is no place for me in this new set-up. But now even these apprentices have no regard for me and openly insult me, I don't see any point in continuing here ." vii. When Becharbhai asked the apprentices to unload the lorry they objected as lorry was too heavy and distance was too great. To this Becharbhai with the help of two coolies got the lorry unloaded. 3. OBJECTIVE RELATED TO THE PROBLEM SHORT TERM : To overcome the insecurity of Mr.Becharbhai. LONG TERM: To achieve proper coordination between Mr.Becharbhai and Mr.Ismail. 4. GENERATION OF ALTERNATIVES i. Recruitment of apprentices could have been done by Mr.Becharbhai. ii. Training of apprentices could have been done by Mr.Becharbhai. iii. There should have been a single point of contact i.e. apprentices must have been told to report to Mr.Becharbhai. iv. To increase the responsibilities and authority of Mr.Becharbhai . 5.
