And so the Adventure Begins

And So the Adventure Begins In the summer of 1984, my family spent three unforgettable weeks in the Superstitious Mountains; a popular recreation destination for most adventurers. Desert climate and extreme summer temperatures, hiking trails and rock climbing; what more could one ask for? You would think camping in the mountains would be fun, but try living in these harsh conditions. As a fifteen year old girl my family packed up everything we owned, traveled endless hours to this God forsaken place, where I thought I would surely die. Being the oldest of four in my family, I watched my mom and dad try as hard as they could to provide as much as they could for us all. They just never seemed to get ahead. In an effort to make a better life, my mother, who was wise beyond her years and always willing to try something new and my father, who was always looking for ways to move up in life, decided to sell all of their household belongings and move to Phoenix, Arizona. Jobs were supposed to be numerous and loads of money to be made. We loaded up what few belongings we had left in our rusted up, flatbed one ton with homemade sideboards to start our journey. My parents, my three siblings and I all traipsing across the countryside must have surely looked like the “The Beverly Hillbillies”. Mom, dad and my two small brothers shared the single seat upfront; while my eight year old sister and I took up residence in the back of the truck. Among the boxes of what few things mom had kept; blankets, pots and pans, clothes and family photos we began our nineteen hour trip. To pass the time we sang songs from every decade and played countless games of slug bug, and eye spy. As our beat up old truck jolted down the long and winding road, I couldn’t help but wonder what this new place was going to be like. We were all excited to start exploring as we reached the camp grounds.
