English KAT: Soap Opera Essay Soap operas; they’ve been part of everyone’s life. Whether you love them or despise them, they still make you feel. I will be going over every part of a soap, so all you need to do is to sit back, relax and enjoy this essay (if you can)… The oldest soap is Coronation Street, stemming a mesmerising 51 years. The rest are little kids compared to Corrie, with Emmerdale at 39, EastEnders at 26 and Hollyoaks at 16. Millions of viewers are attracted to this phenomenon. The reason why soap operas are called soap operas is they used to be sponsored by soap companies back when they originally began. And the reason they’re known as operas is originally, people thought of them to be dramatic like Italian operas but soaps are on the TV and Operas are in the theatre. There are 2 soap operas which are successful and don’t culminate from this island. The 2 Australian soaps on Five, Neighbours and Home And Away. 2 Soap operas which were popular before they were taken off the TV in Britain were called, Brookside and Family Affairs. The scheduling of soaps is very important to the people who run big TV Companies. They are shown before the time known as the Watershed (before 9:00pm) and don’t use a lot of swear words. If they do, they usually cancel the words out. They’re usually shown in the “Prime Time” slot. The Prime time slot is the early evening slot from 5:30pm till the watershed. This shows that the TV companies have massive confidence in the shows and are willing to put them on at that time of day. On Mondays and Fridays you can get soaps 5:30pm till 9:00pm.
