Throughout the chapter entitled “Train” in her novel When the Emperor was Divine, author Julie Otsuka presents various images to the reader through the eyes of her character, the girl, while revealing the emotions and thoughts of this character. One of such images is a man and woman riding bicycles. Although a common scene for the majority of people, this incident shows how the girl yearns for simple joy that activities such as riding a bike may bring to person. Such happiness is clearly repressed upon her journey to and life in the internment camp. The sight of happiness in these people clearly furthers the sadness the girl contains. Another aspect the girl focuses on is the status between the two people. While the girl ponders this idea, the reader quickly realizes that her observations are of friendship she may never experience. Furthermore, the laughing of the woman once again provides an opposition to the girl’s feelings at the time, deepening her sadness even more. Altogether, the girl comes to realize that the experiences of those outside are filled with excitement and joy. The girl’s observations on the other side of the shade, however, provide a different experience and effect on the girl’s emotions; the man missing two fingers and the girl’s contact with this man surely reveal the internal plight of the train. The girl’s inability to communicate with this man shows disconnect even between those who are suffering together on the train. The fact that the girl not only is isolated from the rest of the country but also from those on the train foreshadows sadness and isolation within the interment camp as well. The man’s lack of two fingers also symbolizes the plight of the girl. Although she may not physically lack fingers, the girl does lack a sense of belonging.
