The red leaf is symbolic of hope and potential for the girl however it always positioned away from the girl. This stresses that although the girl is consumed by despair and misery, hope is always there. The last page gives a rush of colour as the bright red tree dazzles the girl and the girl is seen smiling for the first time which symbolises her renewed spirit, passion and sense of hope for herself. Also, the girl in the last image is drawn more sharply than all the other pictures and her face seems to radiate with enlightenment. This shows that the girl’s depressed and miserable state of mind has finally been lifted and she is finally able to see the bright side of life as she completes her inner and imaginative journey.
Though she does not hide her insecurities as much as Amanda does. She does not put on an act because she is very shy and can be best understood through her body language. Mama observes this behavior in the beginning of the text by explaining “Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners homely and ashamed” (297). Maggie is ashamed because of the “burn scars down her arms and legs” (297) from a house fire years ago. The insecurities of Maggie’s character are not just skin deep, much like my own.
Growing up, he always felt as if his mother was purposely embarrassing him and very strange compared to other mothers. He was embarrassed to have a white mother and having this “antique” bike makes it even worse. Plus she was the only white women in the neighborhood which would draw attention in the black community. This grasped the theme because every place Ruth went, she never truly felt at home but always lost. In this neighborhood, she didn’t feel at home because she wasn’t accepted by the entire community.
Porphyria is a youngish woman with 'yellow' or blonde hair who though she doesn’t say much in the poem, has the power to block out the storm outside. She manages to change her lovers gloom demeanour into joy. She first takes quite a dominant role in the relationship with her and her lover. He sits around quite, waiting and moping around, until she arrives and lights up the mood & atmosphere in the room. I think porphyria is quite controlling and maybe a bit selfish.
From the visual techniques used there are many ideas communicated to the audience as we can feel a sense of loneliness, depression, and desperation. Even though she is in a dark world that is hopeless, the small picture of the red leaf indicates that she is clutching onto a small glimmer of hope. The writing with this picture lacks punctuation and has negative connotations to show that she is starting to give up hope. Later on into the book there is a page where the girl is seen standing on a stage with the colours of light and dark juxtaposing with each other, which creates a meaning that, she is surrounded by darkness. The vector lines in this image points to her face, making her the focal point and the composition of the objects are foreign, cluttered together and form negative connotations.
When she became poor Esperanza still felt that she was above all of the poor people she was now living and working with. It took time for Esperanza to realize that she was also poor; a changing moment in the novel was when she held hands with Sylvia. Although Sylvia was dirty, Esperanza held hands with her because she remembered the day on the train when Mama became upset with her when she would not let the little girl play her doll. She became
Sometimes women smile to support their family ,or because somebody is smiling ,forgetting what is the real importance and value of a natural and spontaneous smile. When I smiled is in order to show my emotions , but sometime I just do it for education and to seem nice, feelings According to Amy Cunningham ,”We smile so often and so promiscuously—when we’re angry ,when we’re tense , when we’re with children , when we’re being photographed.”Amy’s opinion support the idea that a woman’s smile has lost it’s real value of meaning. Women smile, to show that they are happy and to share their love with their loved one’s to demonstrate how proud they are of their family. Families are very dependent of a women support and love. In our society a woman’s smile has become part of our life and culture, and for that reason they smile so often to show their feelings and emotions.
These stories of Flo’s keep Rose’s mind wondering what to expect on the train ride and again when she arrives in Toronto. Rose doesn’t have the best self esteem as she is always concerned with what people think of her. She often fantasizes about older men in her hometown and these experiences carry with her onto the train ride. Rose is a very shy young woman who is concerned about her appearance and what others will derive from it. The purpose of her trip to Toronto is to acquire some different things for herself and a few things for Flo, mostly cosmetics and toiletries.
Where as ʻThunderingʼ is a metaphor for noisy sinking. Another metaphor is ʻPandemoniumʼ and it means chaos and hell. In this poem, 2 symbols are used, broken toys and hat boxes. Broken toys symbolizes children and hat boxes symbolizes women, as they were supposedly the first to leave on the boat, but the speaker in the poem took their place and now feels sympathetic for taking their places. Throughout the poem, it is written in a first person point of view, which allows the reader to engage into the speakers mind and emotions, which also makes the reader feel sympathy for the speaker in this case.
