Edgar Allen Poe demonstrates in his written works of “Lenore”, “Annabel Lee”, and “To Helen” an element that seemingly attempts to give the reader exceptional emotional sadness. Poe does this by telling the poem in a point of view where a man tells the story of the death or remembrance of a young love or woman. He also puts a sense of gloom in each of his poems. This allows for the reader to create a mental image if the setting, without him having to directly point it out. As well, the gloominess of his poetry could also be due to his longing effect of sadness that he attempts to express.
The results of war are shown both similarly and differently in the two poems. The contexts also differ due to the poet’s experiences of war. Wilfred Owen died fighting in World War One whereas Alfred Tennyson learned about the battle second hand therefore they have different perspectives. In ‘Futility’, Owen uses metaphors that could represent the feelings of the soldiers but Alfred Tennyson tells the story of the battle. In ‘Futility’, Owen utilizes personifications such as ‘The kind old sun will know’ and ‘Woke once the clays of a cold star’ to create a sense of desperation on the part of the soldiers.
Compare how poets use language to present feelings in “The Manhunt” and one other poem (Nettles) In ‘Manhunt’, Simon Armitage uses rhyme to reflect the togetherness of a relationship. He says “After the first phase, after passionate nights and intimate days.” As the poem goes on, the reader can start to recognise that the un-rhymed cuplets show how fragmented their relationship has become. In ‘Nettles’ Vernon Scannell uses elements of nature, the nettles, to portray his keen anger towards the pain his son is going through. At the beginning of the poem, Scannell uses soft ‘s’ sounds to emphasise the soothing of his injured son who has fallen in a nettle bed. The child is presented using emotive language.
However, instead of literally expressing themes of love, both poets seem to explore the effects of love, and the consequences it can have. Firstly, both poems express the emotion of pain, but in different ways, with Nettles looking at how our pain can also be shared by those we love, whereas Quickdraw looks at how love, sometime maybe unrequited or incomplete, can cause us pain. We can see this theme in Nettles through the semantic field of war, shown with Army vocabulary, including words such as ‘spears’, regiments’ and ‘recruits’, used to describe the ‘bed’ of nettles that cause pain to the persona’s child. This use of vocabulary enables the reader to associate the pain and destruction of war with the situation of the poem, taking the pain felt by the persona to the extreme and amplifying the effect it has on the persona. This enables it to have a much greater impact, and helps the poems transition into the consequences of this pain, such as the anger it causes.
This means he is described as fragile and precious because of his injuries, with his punctured lung described as delicate as “parachute silk”. These images show Laura’s tenderness for her husband and how she wants to protect him. Similarly, Scannel also chooses imagery of war for what is really only a minor childhood incident. He refers to the spears of the nettles, calling them a “regiment” and, when he has cut them down and they have grown back again, he refers to them as “tall recruits”. This war and battle imagery used in the poem helps the reader to understand deeper, about the metaphorical meaning of this poem; that it is not just about comforting his son from the pain of the nettles, but also about the future pain of which he knows he will experience in his life.
I Do Not Love Thee Figurative Language: What poetic devices were used in this poem? The poetic device is rhyme. What did these poetic devices do for the poem? It made the poem rhyme. Did these devices help create imagery or communicate the author's feelings?
“The Peace of Wild Things” is a poem written by American poet Wendell Berry. I feel Wendell Berry uses a unique approach of words to express the feelings and emotions in “The Peace of Wild Things”. I believe the speaker is a father who is stressing over life’s challenges to support and provide for his family. The poem expresses what the father is feeling as he awakes in the middle of the night and what he does to release his stress. Works
Musically, these songs didn’t use a lot of long notes. It was as if they were almost speaking instead of singing. There were quite a few differences I identified while listening to each song. Lyrically, PP542 was very long and repeated the same line over and over again, “O, Polly, pretty Polly”. This story ended with Willie breaking Polly’s heart.
While the conflict of individual vs. self is resolved in this story, the same conflict in “The Raven” is not so easily dismissed. In “The Raven”, the main character is stricken with grief and is beside himself with the loss of Lenore. Contrary to this poem, the short story “The Things They Carried” tells the story of Lieutenant Cross dealing with the guilt of being responsible for the loss of his comrade. Both these literary works share the common conflict of individual vs. self and use a variety of literary techniques to display the internal struggle. “The Raven” focuses more on symbolism and tone to provide the reader with a glimpse into the mindset of a man stricken with the memories of a lost love.
Blind Horse By Norman MacCaig “Blind Horse”, by Norman MacCaig is a convincing and well written poem that is told as though it is an observation of a horse that has lost its sight. The poem communicates to the reader the horse’s confusion and frustration in a very clever way, using various poetic techniques. The poet successfully manages to create an emotional reaction that makes the reader feel very sympathetic by the clever use of the poet’s language and techniques. At first, to create the atmosphere of sympathy towards the horse, the poet conveys the horse’s boredom and confusion. This is done from the very start of the poem with the use of imagery.
