Analysis of Personal and Organizational Ethics and Values between For-Profit and Not-for-Profit Organizations Garry Hopper PHI445: Personal & Organizational Ethics Instructor: Joel Tennis July 1, 2013 Although the American Red Cross (ARC) and ABC supply Co. are two very different companies, they follow a very similar set of moral guidelines in the way conduct their business. The American Red Cross (ARC) is a nonprofit agency with a long history of providing relief to individuals affected by war and natural disaster. In contrast, ABC Supply Co. is a for-profit company specializing in the distribution of building materials. Oddly enough, the ARC purchases some of its building supplies from ABC Supply in its efforts to help people affected by disasters. The American Red Cross (ARC) is a nonprofit agency with a long history of providing relief to individuals affected by war and natural disaster. Founded on May 21, 1881, it was first formed in order to aid men wounded on the battlefield. It evolved into a network of approximately 1,300 local chapters of volunteers who respond to flood, fire, earthquake, and drought. Controlling about 50% of the blood services in the U.S., about half of their revenues come from the sales of its blood products. The rest comes from charitable donations and fund raising. Their Mission Statement is as follows; “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” (www.redcross.org) The company’s mission and vision statement is as follows; Mission Statement The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
