Unable to join the Confederate army, he yearned to help the South’s war effort in some significant way. One evening, Farquhar and his wife were sitting on a bench out in front of their house soldier rode up and asked for a drink a drink of water. The soldier appeared to be from the Confederate army. While his wife was fetching the water, Farquhar asked for news of the front and was informed that Northern forces had repaired the railroads in anticipation of launching another advance, having already reached the Owl Creek bridge. He opens the story with a man perched on a bridge, several feet above a river, with his hands bound and a noose around his neck. The man was Peyton Fahrquhar and he was awaiting his execution for crimes committed against the Union Army (the north.) The Union Army believed that Peyton had conspired to blow up a bridge that they had planned to utilize for supply runs and troop movement. Ironically this is the very bridge from which Peyton is now about to be hanged. As Peyton prepares to die he seems to succumb to the enormous weight on his mind and starts to ‘black out.’ As the plank he is perched on is removed he plunges to what will surely be his certain death.

The Union seemed about to seize the besieged city of Vicksburg, Mississippi and capture an entire Confederate army, which was trapped up in the town. This would cut the Confederacy in two and give the Union free navigation of the entire Mississippi River. The position of General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee was little better. Not only had Bragg's invasion of Kentucky been repulsed in the autumn of 1862, but also his defeat near Murfreesboro, Tennessee in early January of 1863 had nearly driven his army out of Tennessee
