Chapter one Citizenship Education Introduction Citizenship education is the process of making individual to acquire the knowledge, values, norms and skills of becoming a good citizen. It is important more especially at our present time of democratic dispensation in the country. People; young in particular who are the leaders of tomorrow needs to have such type of education that can prepare them to adult responsibility. It is also aims at providing information to individuals such as democracy and its principle, rule of law, rights and duties or obligation of citizens. Introducing citizenship education in to Nigeria system of education will enable young people to be fully participating in the political affairs of the country. Citizenship education is not about trying to fit everyone into the same mold-creating the “model” or good citizen. It aim is to empower citizen to made their own decision and take responsibility for their lives and life of their communities. It is more than a subject, if taught well and tailored to the local needs, its skills and values will enhance democratic life for all of us, both rights and responsibilities, beginning in school and radiating out. (Bernard 1999 ) Concept Of Citizenship Education The concept of citizenship education had been defines by different scholars at various time and nations. Even though it may achieve the same objectives but varies in the conceptualization. For example citizenship in Nigeria may mean the process of preparing individuals for becoming effective citizens. But in some countries like USA citizenship education is use for preparing immigrant to become citizens of USA. Citizenship education is a programmed design to inculcate knowledge, values and attitude, norms, skills and tradition to individuals so that he may fit well within his society.
