Chinese parents aren’t. They assume strength, not fragility, and as a result they behave very differently.” (pg 412) The issue with the idea in this passage is that Eastern parents do not realize that children are not born with a strong confidence in everything that they do. Confidence and feelings of competence and ability must be instilled in a child through praise and reassurance. If a child is “assumed” to be strong enough to withstand extreme expectations, pressure, and harsh critique at th hands of their parents, they will
It is evident that Tan’s mother is considered by the society as inferior because of her broken English. Even her daughter was first ashamed of her due to the fact that she cannot speak good English that is understood by many people in the society. However, the significance of “Mother Tongue” in our lives is the overriding theme in the article. From the beginning, Tan struggles with her two different worlds. Being born in China but living in America, she seems ashamed of her roots and that is why she is embarrassed when her mother speaks broken English (Tan 142-146).

A turkey on Thanksgiving is a big part of mine. We go over to my grandma’s house, we have stuffing, tamales, pozole, and then there’s the turkey. It’s the turkey that everyone loves. Without it, it is not Thanksgiving in my family. A lot of people may argue that we could have Thanksgiving without the turkey.
How are the Birlings presented prior to the Inspectors entrance in ‘An Inspector Calls’? In the beginning of the play the Birlings are having a family dinner to celebrate the engagement of Sheila, Mr Birling’s daughter and Gerald Croft. The Birling Family come across as your average middle-class family; Mr Birling, a wealthy business man who owns a factory; his wife, Mrs. Birling who is a social climber and is very concerned about her appearance; Eric, Mr Birling’s son, who is quite uneasy; Sheila, Mr Birling’s daughter who is being engaged to Gerald and Gerald who is the son of one of Mr. Birling’s business rivals. Mr Birling is a self-made industrial businessman who shares capitalist values; you can tell this from some of the things he says. He is very business orientated as even when he is meant to be celebrating his daughter being engaged to her love he sees the benefits it will have for his business.
There is no enjoyable memories that her mother could think of after Beth points out that the solely pleasurable memory her mother has with April is hers. The changes of the 13th and 14th century greatly affected the Chinese and changed China forever. It was the first time ever that the Chinese had been ruled, watched over, and governed by non-native Chinese people. Also, it discontinued the ‘art’ of foot binding for most of the population. The system of government created by Kublai Khan was made up of a deal made between Mongolian feudalism and the traditional Chinese autocratic-bureaucratic system. But still, socially the educated Chinese elite were in general not given the degree of esteem that they had been accorded previously under native Chinese dynasties.
By losing the language, I stopped celebrating most of the holidays and events that I’ve celebrated in the past when I was only speaking Chinese. I stopped eating some traditional Chinese food because I’ve gotten used to eating the American food. I also stopped trying to keep in touch with my relatives and friends in China because of the communication issue. They couldn’t speak English, and I was no longer comfortable with speaking Chinese. Besides, we didn’t have anything in common that we could talk about, because we don’t share the same kind of lifestyles anymore.
It’s because Chinese people think after women get married they will live with their husband and they will become a part of the other family. So women never had rights in their family. It is actually the same thing going on in Salam. During Puritan times, Women do not have rights to express their feelings or do anything they want. They are lived in a high pressure life.
