Laura Moore Professor Hovious English 1001 October 1st, 2014 How Much Does the Old Spice Odor Blocker Really Block? Old Spice commercials are always intense, humorous, outrageous, and much more. They try to persuade the audience to purchase products by getting their attention through their humor-filled commercials, and not much informative about the actual product. They carefully put together their advertisements so that they appeal to a certain audience and promotes the product in a unique way. The producers of Old Spice advertising utilize many rhetorical tools to make successful ads.
In “Advertising’s Fifteen…” the most entertaining and arguably one of the most vital parts of the article are the examples. In his article Fowles gave several examples for each appeal that illustrated the ideas he wanted to portray. For example, Fowles tries to show how some advertisements use the “need to affiliation” to catch the eye of the consumer by saying, if we don’t use Scope, we’ll have the “Ugh! Morning Breath” (Fowles 663). This example shows how Fowles’ examples are very vivid and shows how advertising companies try to actually use many of these appeals to grasp our attention as well as our wallets.

Journal 03: America Tony Hoagland’s poem “America” uses specific nouns and metaphors to tell readers that America is too obsessed with material objects and self-satisfaction. Hoagland uses these nouns and metaphors to hide truth from the naked eye, specific diction is also used in combination with these metaphors to expose corruption in American society. In the opening lines, Hoagland writes, “Then one of the students with blue hair and a tongue stud / Says that America is for him a maximum-security prison / Whose walls are made of Radio Shacks, Burger Kings, and MTV episodes.” Hoagland almost lists the details of American trends by mentioning hair color and piercings, and by describing businesses like Radio Shack which sell 70-inch flat screen televisions, which are completely unnecessary, and fast food restaurants like McDonald’s that give super-sized food portions. He first explains how he is a stereotypical hero, and than goes on to how the villains personify major cultural problems, and than he explains how John confronts his problems in his own nature. * After watching the movie Die Hard myself, I had a completely different interpretation of the movie than the author. However, after reading the essay “Die Hard: The American Mythos”, by Peter Parshall, I agree with every interpretation of the author.

The article, Why I love Shoplifting, talks about the unfair treatment that big corporations force upon citizens of the world. The essay explains and expresses the opinions of a shoplifter and why she steals from corporations. The author gives valid reasons for why people shoplift and why it is acceptable for them to do it. In the essay, the author analyzes the pros and cons of shoplifting in order to establish a credible connection with the audience, thus providing a credible connection with them. Using the collective knowledge of ex-corporation workers, the author uses rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos, and logos to express the true nature of the shoplifter’s intentions.
