Analysis: American Psycho In the novel American Psycho, Ellis repeatedly list out a series of consumer products. In the chapter of “Morning”, there are detail description about the steps that the main character, Patrick Bateman, takes in pampering and taking care of himself. “Then I inspect my hands and use a nailbrush. I take the ice-pack mask off and use a deep-pore cleanser lotion, then an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for ten minutes while I check my toenails...In the shower I use first a water-activated gel cleanser then a honey-almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub…” (p. 26) The listing of things and sequence of steps are seen throughout the novel. The usage of list usually stresses a point of view. In the above example, Bateman describes his morning rituals in such detail reveals the fact that he is obsessed with his appearance. He takes pride in all the little procedures he maintains and emphasizes his good look needs a lot of dedicated work. The 4 pages descriptions of his morning rituals tell us that he is high maintenance and he adheres to high quality products. Bateman also likes to name the labels that his colleagues are wearing at various occasions. Again, he names the labels, and outfits piece by piece, person by person. The indulgence on consumer products and Bateman’s obsessions and knowledge about popular brands tells us how he judges people by their looks and products they use. Not once, but everyday, everywhere. The overwhelming of lists of labels exaggerates the idea and life style of consumerism. The repetitive of label listing and product listing not only brings us a capitalistic world, it also collaborates with the various series found in the book. For example, Bateman as a serial killer, his series of morning routines, his favorite TV show series and list of Canadian water etc. This serial writing
