American Literature Reflection I have read such a variety of stories and poems over this twelve week course and some I have been able to relate to and some not so much. I have come to the realization that I have so much to learn about the history of American literature. After reading and studying some of American literature classics I have found a connection to two of the texts, particularly, because they were written in a way that I could follow and understand and dealt with issues that are still a factor in today’s society. The first one would be Tennessee Williams “The Glass Menagerie”. This play had a huge impact on me because I think that we all have had a time in life were we wanted to escape our past and may have never really thought too much about it. This story made ask that question of myself, have I ever wanted to escaped my past and why? There was a time in life where I would never want to revisit and I have used humor to avoid the real issues I have with my past. In the play Tom continuously makes jokes about his dad, and how he "fell in love with long distances."(Williams, 2013 p.734) This is his attempt to ease the pain of neglect by turning it into something humorous. I grew up in a time where most of the people I knew either had no father in their life or a strained one, when we spoke of our fathers it was usually in a joking manner now thinking back it was really just to hide the pain and or anger we had inside. Another selection would be Alice Walker’s Everyday Use. I have a somewhat painful connection to this story. It seems to be that whenever someone dies family turns on each other or lie/manipulate their way into getting what they feel rightfully belongs to them. There was a part in the story where Dee and Maggie were arguing
