American Feature Film Critical Analysis William McCormick Eng 225 Introduction to Film Stanley Davis August 7, 2012 American Feature Film Critical Analysis Introduction The American feature film of chose is “Platoon”. The use of the critical analysis questions provided in the textbook will be used as a guide while writing the final paper. Main topics will be storytelling, acting, cinematography, editing, sound, style and directing, impact of society on the film and vice versa, genre, application of at least one approach to analysis and interpretation, and overall textual themes. Because the movie shows the detrimental effect of war on the human psychological well-being of innocent young people, it is still talked about today, and the movie won many awards. This critical analysis may attempt to explain how various techniques are used to make certain scenes or the whole film particularly effective while also interpreting the deeper levels of meaning through the critical analysis (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). Storytelling A film will start with a writer’s story, and the story will start with words on a page. The movie storytelling throughout history has begun with someone coming up with an idea and then communicating this idea to an audience while telling a story of interest. What is rarely thought of is where the movie really begins and that it is the same place as a novel or short story: with a writer staring at a blank page. There are many ways to tell a story, however, the function is the same: to tell a story in the most compelling way possible (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). There are many forms of storytelling that have been used throughout the history of movies.
