Define the American Dream Many people put life and limb on the line to achieve their goals and strive for greatness. They “Dream as if [they’ll] live forever. Live as if [they'll] die today (James Dean).” No one can define greatness but people at their own personal levels. Everyone in this world strives for things that make them happy and give them a sense of accomplishment. Unfortunately, this feeling of happiness doesn’t last forever.

These questions are common and sometimes they have been the dominating issues in some societies like the American society. Many years ago, from the very early steps in founding the new American society, freedom has been one of the most important concepts which people have dreamed to establish. Actually there are two sides in this issue, one of them is the ideals and the literal concepts that they have wished to keep and the other one is the lived fact that exists on the reality.

The American dream is sought after and imagined by everyone who comes to America. It is the main reason that people come to America; they come for freedom as well as to one day attain the idea of a perfect American dream. It theoretically symbolizes what you have accomplished in life and what you wish to one day have. In my personal opinion if any person wants come to America to live a life of happiness, be released of religious persecution and the freedom to say what you feel, then it can be accomplished. This is the first thing you get as soon as you become an American.
But if we think about it, without the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, things might have never of changed. African Americans could still be treated like slaves and not treated like human beings. America would still be a very segregated place. Freedom Summer was a very dark time in American history but all in all, America has turned out pretty good. It’s no doubt that America was not the most favorable place during this time period for most, if not all African Americans.
